Dermal Fillers – Lip Fillers

Dermal Fillers

Restore a youthful appearance and resilience to skin

Information

When we consider what a youthful face looks like, volume in the cheeks and lips, smooth contours and a defined jawline all spring to mind. Unfortunately, as we age, it’s common for the shape of the face to change and for volume to decrease. The result is a face that looks older and more tired.

Dermal fillers have become the go-to treatment for anyone who wants to restore volume and see an instant difference in the appearance of wrinkles, folds and facial contours.

Along with contouring areas around the mouth such as the lip lines, marionette lines and nasolabial folds, fillers are also used to add volume to the lips.

A series of injections are used to create the desired effect after a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area. Treatments are very quick and patients are free to resume their normal routine directly afterwards. As for the results, they will last at least six months but, in some instances, results can last as long as 18 months.

The side effects of dermal fillers are temporary and localised to the area of injection and typically resolve within a week.

Dermal Fillers – Q & A:

Dermal fillers should always be injected by a cosmetic nurse or doctor with the necessarily experience and qualifications. Dermal fillers are based on substances that naturally exist in the body and are designed to effectively reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, create volume and contour, and to revitalise the skin.

The number of injections used will depend on your goals and the severity of volume loss. Your Infinity Skin therapist will tell you more about the number of units during your consultation. Please note that if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we cannot administer fillers. You also need to be over the age of 18 to qualify for dermal fillers sessions at Infinity Skin.

Although dermal filler injection sessions are bearable, we can apply a topical numbing cream 30 minutes before your appointment. Based on feedback from past patients, the injections only create a slight sting, which rapidly subsides. It’s best to keep in mind that everyone has a different pain threshold and you know your body best. The discomfort experienced can also differ per treatment area.

You can start receiving dermal filler treatments from the moment you begin seeing the signs of age, such as permanent lines and wrinkles. In most instances, men and women seek treatment from their early 30s onwards. Even patients in their 20s can receive fillers if facial volume is decreasing more rapidly than someone who is older.

At Infinity Skin Clinic we only use market-leading brands. For legal reasons, we are unable to publish the dermal filler brand names. If you decide do go ahead with a cosmetic injectable consultation, our professional cosmetic injectors can freely provide you with further information regarding the brands we use.

Dermal fillers last anywhere from three to six months, but it’s possible for the results to last as long as 18 months.

The most common side effects occur immediately after treatment or within the first 24 hours after your session. Common side effects of dermal fillers include bruising, swelling, redness and tenderness, all of which is very mild. Your skin therapist will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to minimise any aftereffects.

While these two treatments are easily confused, there is a difference between them. Dermal fillers are designed to restore volume to areas such as the cheeks, lips and the area around the mouth. Anti-wrinkle injections are designed to smooth out expression lines and wrinkles. This is done by blocking nerve signals to the muscles that create these lines. Anti-wrinkle injections won’t freeze the muscle, they simply weaken the muscles. This smooths out existing lines and wrinkles and prevents new lines from forming, resulting in a more youthful face. Many patients choose to combine dermal fillers with anti-wrinkle injections to treat all the signs of premature ageing. It’s completely safe to do so.

Directly after your treatment, your face will be cleaned but you won’t be able to apply makeup for at least six hours. It is also important that you not touch or rub the treated area for six hours. If you do apply makeup on the first day, mineral makeup is the preferred choice. After your dermal filler session, intense heat should be avoided, included direct sun exposure and saunas. Strenuous exercise and alcohol will also need to be avoided for the first day to ensure the injections take effect correctly. There are certain medications and supplements that should be avoided for the first day – we will take you through these specifications during your consultation. Lastly, facials, waxing peels and any laser treatments will need to be avoided for two weeks. Don’t forget to stay hydrated and wear a high SPF sunscreen to enhance and prolong your results.

Permanent fillers can be used but know that they don’t last forever. While the name might indicate otherwise, permanent fillers usually last about five years. However, they’re generally not the most popular choice amongst patients. Permanent fillers are not advisable if this is the first time you’re trying dermal fillers. It’s always best to start with a gradual volume increase to decide if you’re happy with the results.
